How Often Should You Change Your HVAC Air Filter?

The Importance of Clean Air Filters

Your HVAC air filter is the first line of defense for both your equipment and your indoor air quality. A clean filter traps dust, pollen, pet dander, and other airborne particles, preventing them from circulating through your home and clogging your system's components.

When filters get dirty, your HVAC system has to work harder to push air through, leading to higher energy bills, reduced comfort, and premature wear on expensive components like the blower motor and compressor.

Recommended Filter Change Schedule

The right schedule depends on several factors:

Standard 1-Inch Filters

  • No pets, no allergies: Every 90 days
  • One pet: Every 60 days
  • Multiple pets or allergies: Every 30-45 days
  • Smokers in the home: Every 30 days

Thicker Media Filters (4-5 Inch)

  • Standard use: Every 6-12 months
  • Pets or allergies: Every 4-6 months

Reusable/Washable Filters

  • Clean monthly with water and mild detergent
  • Replace entirely every 3-5 years

Signs Your Filter Needs Changing Now

Even if you're following a schedule, watch for these warning signs:

  • Visible dirt buildup — Hold the filter up to a light. If you can't see through it, it's time to replace it.
  • Increased dust on furniture and surfaces throughout your home.
  • Allergy symptoms getting worse indoors.
  • Higher energy bills without a change in usage patterns.
  • System running longer to reach the set temperature.
  • Reduced airflow from your vents.

Choosing the Right Filter

Filters are rated by MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) on a scale of 1-20:

  • MERV 1-4: Basic filtration, fiberglass filters. Catches large particles only.
  • MERV 5-8: Good for residential use. Catches dust, mold spores, and pet dander.
  • MERV 9-12: Better filtration. Catches fine dust, legionella, and auto emissions.
  • MERV 13-16: Hospital-grade. Excellent for allergy sufferers but may restrict airflow in some systems.

We generally recommend MERV 8-11 for most Pocono Mountains homes. Higher isn't always better — a filter that's too restrictive can strain your system. Ask our technicians which MERV rating is right for your specific equipment.
