Why You Might Consider A Ductless Air Conditioner

Are you considering which HVAC system is more convenient for you? At Jeff’s HVAC, we work tirelessly to make the process easier for you, outlining all the options available to you. Something that has become increasingly popular over the years is ductless air conditioners, also known as mini-split A/Cs. A ductless air conditioner consists of three parts:

  1. Air handler/evaporator - The evaporator or the indoor unit can be mounted on your home’s floor, wall, or ceiling. They take in moisture and heat from the air and then blow cool air back into the room. At the same time, it sends all the heat and moisture from the room through the conduit.
  2. Conduit - The conduit connects the indoor unit to the outdoor unit. It’s a thin, long cable that gives power to the indoor and outdoor unit
  3. Condenser - Compared to the evaporator, it is an outdoor unit. It takes all the hot air that was taken from inside your house and disposes it outside.

While overwhelmingly similar to standard central air conditioning systems, they do have several differences. For one, with standard air conditioning, ducts that can be hidden push and pull air into a central location, which then delivers cool air throughout your home through a vent system. On the other hand,
ductless air conditioners are thin, long units without ducts, and are located in each room.

Advantages of Ductless Air Conditioners

  • If there is no ductwork in your home, then it is easy to install a ductless air conditioner. Ductwork helps distribute air from your HVAC system throughout your home. Yet, installing ductwork involves the tasks of cutting through walls, floors, and ceilings. Fortunately, ductwork is not necessary for a ductless AC.
  • Many ductless air conditioners come with heat pumps, meaning that they can both cool down your room as well as heat it up when the time calls for it.
  • Compared to standard air conditioners, mini-split AC units are more energy-efficient as they do not experience duct leakage. About 20 to 30% of the air in central air conditioners is lost through the duct system.

Things to Consider Before Installing a Ductless AC

  • If there is existing ductwork in your home, the installation of ductless air conditioners might come at a great cost. On top of that, it costs about 30% less to install a central air system.
  • Because they are mounted on the ceiling, floor, or wall, it is visible and is not easy to hide. Standard A/Cs, however, are usually placed in the basement or a closet and can be hidden. Depending on your preference, it might not be aesthetically pleasing.
